Well ya'll, it's March. We have just 2 short months of school left, even less when you consider that basketball districts, spring break, CTE, and state testing will take some of that time left. Where has it gone??
This past month we've celebrated birthdays, adventured outside, and I got the chance to travel to Anchorage for a conference.
While there, we talked about teaching, and the universal struggles that many teachers face. However, sometimes teachers in the bush face some things we never though of.
One quote from an Alaskan teacher that resonated with me
"Abandoning my "shoulds" and meeting my students where they are with what they need"
This was one thing that I struggled with the most as a teacher, and sometimes still struggle with to this day. Teaching in the bush is like teaching family- everyone is so close knit; most of the students are closely related. Mix in there the cultural and societal differences and it can bring the difficulty level up another notch.
As the days continue on, I try to remember that it's not what my students are lacking in that is important, it's what they can do that is essential to success!
